Party Pictures

“Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.” John 12:1-3

There is always more going on than simply what is going on. And in every situation, we know God is always doing more. In this picture, a party in Jesus’ honor was being held. Let’s take some snapshots. Martha, the task-oriented one, the planner and doer, was busy serving the meal. She was concerned that she had no help. Lazarus was enjoying company with Jesus. Mary, the one who feels deeply, anoints Jesus’ feet and wipes it with her hair. Judas, the treasurer, criticizes. And others who heard about the party and also how Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead came to see both. And Jewish leaders were there to scout out their enemy.

My point is this: We can be at peace knowing that God is working in the lives of every person individually rather than getting discouraged or angry if things are not happening exactly the way we think it should be. He encourages Martha. Receives Mary’s worship. Rebuffs Judas’ criticism. And the next day addresses the crowd and the Jewish leaders.

Keep planning ways to honor Jesus in a way that draws all kinds of people. And rejoice in what He is doing with each of them, even if you don’t see it at the time.

Prayer Focus: Thank You Jesus, that while You died for all of us, You work with each of us individually. Help us to keep honoring You even when we don’t see all that You are doing.

We perceive Jerusalem as our own community, Judea as our city, Samaria as our country and the ends of the earth as the world. The Way We Pray

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 What brings answered prayer in a Christian’s life? Do you ever feel that you pray and God is silent or that you grow weary in your prayer life because it seems that God isn’t answering your heart’s desires? Could it be that many times it is because of the way we are praying? This passage of Scripture goes on to say, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Taking God’s yoke on ourselves is a picture of an animal having a harness around its neck and can’t move to the right or left but only where the farmer is leading. It may seem restrictive to see God in that same way, but He wants us to follow Him looking straight ahead and keeping our eyes focused on Him and His purposes. Turning Away

“At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other.” Matthew 24:10 In June, we talked about persecution and the reality that we all may face at some point. Jesus describes in Matthew 24 how difficult it is going to be. Amid that discussion, He says at one point, when the going gets very tough, many will turn away from the faith. Not “their” faith, but the faith. He is talking about a shared belief system. In a singular definite article, He affirms that there is only one saving faith, and that is faith in Him. And there will be those who are initially drawn to that faith when things are good or beneficial to them, but will turn away and betray and hate each other when standing up for that faith brings hardship, suffering and perhaps even death.
